-- The British Academy of Quranic Studies (BAQS) plans to hold a course on interpretation of Surah Maryam.
Slated for November 27, it will be organized with the cooperation of the University of Leeds, IIDR website reported.
Basic concepts of Tawhid (Oneness of God) and monotheism, profethood, resurrection and the afterlife, and God’s mercy and compassion are among the themes in Surah Maryam which will be discussed in the one-day course.
Sheikh Mostahfiz Ghani who is a PhD student of Islamic Sharia in Kingston University in London, will teach the course.
Surah Maryam is an important Surah in terms of providing a mutual and supportive reference to earlier monotheist scriptures preceding the Quran. It takes its name from Maryam (Mary), mother of Prophet Jesus (AS) and contains the story of the miraculous circumstances surrounding his birth. The surah also contains brief stories of other prophets preceding Muhammad (PBUH) and the people who lived after them, highlighting the fate of those that lived in accordance with the guidance brought by the prophets and those who went astray.
The British Academy of Quranic Studies, which is an affiliate of the Islamic Institute for Development and Research (IIDR), has been established with the aim of promoting Quranic research and education.
