Tehran's interim Friday Prayers Leader Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati says the recent US presidential election only brought disgrace on the United States due to the low voter turnout.
Ayatollah Jannati said if this scandalous and disgraceful election had been held in a country opposing US policies, they would have created a hype about low voter turnout.
“Ninety percent of eligible [American voters] did not participate in this election and after spending billions [of dollars], which has no justification, they… reelected a person by force to continue on his deviated path,” he added.
Barack Obama was elected US president for a second term defeating his Republican challenger Mitt Romney on November 7, 2012.
The Iranian cleric also pointed to the ongoing unrest in Syria, saying that Syrians are faced with multiple problems.
“The entire world knows that Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the US, Britain, and the Zionist regime [of Israel] are helping Syria’s enemies,” Jannati said.
The senior cleric likened Syria’s situation to that of Iran during the eight-year Iraqi-imposed war when many countries helped Iraq's former dictator, Saddam Hussein, to destroy the Islamic establishment in Iran.
“The same situation has been created for Syria so as to destroy the country (Syria) which has stood up to the Zionist regime [of Israel] in the interest of this regime,” he concluded.
Syria has been the scene of unrest since March 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.
