Tehran’s interim Friday prayer leader referred to faith in God, the revolution and people and resistance against the United States as the criteria for the country’s president.
Addressing worshipers at Tehran University Campus on Friday, less than a month before Iran’s presidential and municipal council elections, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati added that the country’s president must be anti-corruption and fight corruption wherever it is.
“Seeking justice is another characteristic of a (good) president,” he said, stressing that the president should not be biased.
Ayatollah Jannati stressed that the president must act according to the law. “Even if there is a bad law, it should be followed as long as it has not been abolished.”
He described the presidential elections as very important and said the president should have people’s trust.
The senior cleric highlighted the significance of management skills for the country’s president, saying that the next president should have the ability to manage the country at a time when it is facing economic problems, sanctions, etc.
He criticized some of the presidential hopefuls for promising to negotiate and start ties with the United States.
“Some candidates say they would negotiate with the US and remove sanctions. … Is it possible to vote for someone who has such a viewpoint?”
Ayatollah Jannati further stressed that the presidential candidates must clarify their stance on the Fitna (sedition) that occurred after the previous presidential elections in 2009.
In his first sermon of the Friday prayers, the interim Friday prayer leader of Tehran elaborated on the virtues of the month of Rajab on the lunar Hijri calendar.
