TEHRAN (IQNA) – The unity-seeking current whose flag-bearer is Iran is dominant in the Muslim world today, a senior cleric said.

Secretary General of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought (WFPIST) Ayatollah Mohsen Araki made the remarks in a press conference held here in Tehran Sunday on the upcoming Islamic Unity Conference.

He added that today, with the 33rd edition of the International Islamic Unity Conference coming to Tehran again next week, the discourse of Takfir is a defeated discourse in the Muslim world and it is a great achievement for the Islamic Republic and unity-seeking institutions.

Ayatollah Araki also said the discourse of unity is now spreading in the Muslim world as a serious discourse.

The WFPIST will organize the 33rd International Islamic Unity Conference in the Iranian capital on November 14-16 with 350 Muslim scholars and thinkers from 90 countries in attendance.

It is annually held on the occasion of the Muslim Unity Week.

The 17th day of Rabi al-Awwal, which falls on November 15 this year, is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month as the birthday of the last prophet.

The interval between the two dates is celebrated every year as the Islamic Unity Week.

Late Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Imam Khomeini (RA) declared the occasion as the Islamic Unity Week back in the 1980s.
