Buddhists Attend Ceremony in Colombo to Mark Prophet’s Birthday
According to the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, Iran’s ambassador to Sri Lanka and the country’s Cultural Attaché as well as Sri Lankan Muslims and a number of Buddhists were present at the event, held ion Saturday evening.
Speakers at the program highlighted different aspects of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) character and life, saying the great prophet was a blessing to all mankind.
The 17th day of Rabi al-Awwal, which falls on November 15 this year, is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month as the birthday of the last prophet.
Sri Lanka’s population practices a variety of religions. As of the 2011 census 70.1% of Sri Lankans were Theravada Buddhists, 12.6% were Hindus, 9.7% were Muslim and 6.2% Roman Catholic and 1.4% other.
