Gamal bin Mahmoud Salih Hamdan (1928-1993) was a geography scholar whose encyclopedia “The Personality of Egypt” is considered the most popular in the book fair.
He learned the entire Quran by heart at an early age and also learned Quran recitation and Tajweed from his father.
Hamdan had a PhD in geography from the University of Reading in Britain. He wrote 29 books and many papers on geography of Arab cities, contemporary Muslim world and freedom-seeking in the Arab world.
The 51st edition of the Cairo International Book Fair opened in the Egyptian capital on January 22 and will run until February 4.
