Malaysia Int’l Quran Contest Postponed
According to Iran’s cultural attaché in Kuala Lumpur, Mohammad Oraei Karimi, the competition has been rescheduled to the lunar Hijri month of Dul Qa’da (July).
He cited the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) as saying that as a precautionary measure given the spread of the coronavirus, the contest has been deferred until July.
He said the embassies of participating countries will soon be officially informed of the new date of the international Quranic event.
Karimi also said that organizing the competition will depends on normalization of conditions and an end to the coronavirus pandemic.
The novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, has infected more than 126,000 people around the world.
The outbreak has had a major impact on global sporting, cultural, religious and political events, with a host of events canceled or postponed.
Malaysia’s Quranic event is world’s oldest international Quran competition.
It is officially named the “International Al Quran Recital and Memorisation Assembly”.
Like previous years, the capital city of Kuala Lumpur will host the contest.
It will be organized in the categories of Quran recitation and memorization of the Quran in two sections for men and women.
Ali Reza Bizhani will represent the Islamic Republic of Iran in the international event.
