TEHRAN (IQNA) – While mosques and other places of worship around the world have been closed to stem the spread of the coronavirus, the Grand Mosque in Herat, Afghanistan, continues to host mass prayers.

Hundreds of worshippers attend Taraweeh prayers (special night prayers performed during the holy month of Ramadan) at the mosque every night.

This has drawn criticisms because Afghanistan, like other countries in the world, is still facing the threat of the novel coronavirus.

Herat Province in east of Afghanistan is one of the hardest-hit provinces where the first coronavirus infection was reported on February 24.

The coronavirus outbreak that originated in Wuhan, China, in December has infected over 3.1 million people around the world. The global death toll from the pandemic is now more than 218,000.

Afghanistan has reported 1,828 infections and 58 deaths.
