TEHRAN (IQNA) – Using torture has become a major part of the Bahraini regime’s political system, said the deputy head of the country’s main opposition group, the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society

Speaking on teh occasion of International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, ‎Sheikh Hussain Al Daihi added that the Al Khalifa regime uses torture as one of the main tools of repression.

He said thousands of prisoners in the Arab country have been tortured and many have been killed under torture.

Earlier this week, Bahraini activists and social media users launched a campaign on the platform to demand an immediate end to the torture of political dissidents at prisons and detention centers across the kingdom.

The activists launched the Arabic hashtag ‘Stop Torture in Bahrain’ on Twitter, urging people to pour onto the internet at 8:00 p.m. local time (1700 GMT) on Friday and call for the cessation of the inhuman practice.

Bahrain has seen anti-regime protests over the past nine years. The major demand has been the ouster of the Al Khalifa regime and establishment of a just and conclusive system representing all Bahraini nationals.

The Manama regime, in return, has ignored the calls and is pressing ahead with its heavy-handed crackdown and persecution of human rights campaigners and political dissidents.

Bahrain’s parliament approved the trial of civilians at military tribunals on March 5, 2017. The move drew widespread condemnation from human rights bodies and activists, and was described as imposition of an undeclared martial law across the country.

Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa rubber-stamped the constitutional amendment on April 3 that year.
