TEHRAN (IQNA) – A convoy of Iraqi pilgrims is traveling on foot to visit the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad, northeast Iran.

The convoy started the pilgrimage ten days ago from the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah.

The pilgrims, numbering 70, arrived in Malayer, a city in Iran’s western province of Hamedan, on Tuesday evening.

They were welcomed by the people in the city and were accommodated in one of its mosques.

The head of the convoy says it will take them 30 more days to arrive in Mashhad.

Mashhad is home to the shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the 8th Shia Imam. It is one of the most extensively visited pilgrimage centers in the world.

Tens of millions of pilgrims from all over Iran as well as other countries visit the holy city every year, although, due the coronavirus pandemic, the number of pilgrims has dwindled significantly in the past two years.
