Establishment of Union of Islamic Countries Possible: Official
Speaking in a meeting in Tehran with a delegation of scholars and thinkers from Turkey’s universities, Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Shahriari said founding a union of Muslim countries like the European Union (EU) may seem idealistic but it can be achieved.
There can be a union not only in economic and cultural fields but also in political and religious areas, he said, adding that there is no need for abandoning constitutions and removing borders.
“We can move toward that direction with wisdom,” he stated.
The cleric underlined the importance of unity in the Muslim world and said if there is unity among countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, an Islamic superpower is formed in the world.
The WFPIST chief further called for formation of a joint parliament of Muslim countries to pass joint laws.
He also said that in order to prevent discord and disunity, wars, conflicts and Takfir should be avoided in the Muslim world.
Hojat-ol-Islam Shahriari went on to say that if there is a focus on the roots of Islam and common values, there would be no disputes and conflicts.
At the meeting, members of the Turkish delegation also expressed their views about Muslim unity.
