Relation of Man and Universe in Quranic Worldview
This is because mankind has a divine dimension and all of God’s names and attributes can be manifested in him. Man’s perfection though is not possible without using the things in the world.
This is according to prominent scholar of Islamic philosophy Gholam Reza A’avani (born in 1943 in Semnan, north of Iran).
Dr Avani spoke about some lessons from the book Fusus al-Hikam (seals of wisdom) by Muhyddin ibn Arabi, excerpts of which are as follows:
There is a verse in the Holy Quran that portrays the universe as all things in it are constantly praising God: “The seven heavens, the earth, and whatever is between them all glorify Him. There is nothing that does not glorify Him and always praise him, but you do not understand their praise and glorification. He is All-forbearing and All-forgiving.” (Verse 44 of Surah Al-Isra)
Every particle in the universe does Tasbeeh (glorifies God). Tasbeeh means to declare that there is no imprecation in God. All things praise God for His perfections.
Muslim philosopher Ibn Arabi (1165-1240 AD) says everything that exists in this world is at the hand of human beings and their being at the service of humans is an act of worship. Everything is a servant of God and by being at the service of humans, things in the world worship God. It is because mankind has a divine dimension and all of God’s names and attributes can be manifested in him. Man’s perfection is not possible without using the things in the world.
Ibn Arabi says the angels prostrated before man because everything is at his service and because God has given him existential dignity. Religion has come to awaken man and make him aware of this fact.
