In a post on Facebook, the Dar-al-Ifta said that celebrating the Prophet’s (PBUH) birthday means expressing joy on this day by gathering to remember, praise and glorify the last messenger of God, and feeding (others), fasting and praying, all of which are done as a declaration of love for the Prophet (PBUH).

All of this is permissible, it said, adding that this is based on the general meaning of God's word in Verse 58 of Surah Yunus.

“Furthermore, celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (PBUH) is an expression of respect, celebration and joy for our beloved Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). Celebrating and rejoicing on the anniversary of his birthday is undoubtedly permissible, as expressing love for him is a pillar of faith. Allah the Almighty says: ‘Say (O Prophet): If you love Allah, follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Aal-Imran: 31)’.”

It explained that the religious aspects of celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (PBUH), including reciting the Holy Quran, studying the Prophet’s biography, and holding gatherings of prayer and praise, are all permissible and recommended according to Islamic law.

The Dar-al-Ifta stated that one of the best ways to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet (PBUH) is to send greetings and blessings upon him.

“This opens closed doors, elevates one’s status, and brings peace of mind in times of ease and hardship. In fact, it soothes every sorrow and grief, unties knots, fulfills desires and fulfills needs.”
