IQNA – The Journal of Philosophical Investigations (JPI) is a quarterly published by the University of Tabriz in northwest Iran.

According to Mohammad Asghari, a professor at the University of Tabriz, the journal is the university’s international brand in both Persian and English.

It publishes articles and research by authors from Iran and other countries from five continents on various philosophical and interdisciplinary topics, and has achieved a Q2 ranking in the prestigious global citation database Scopus, he told IQNA in an interview.

This journal is scientific and research-based, and its specialized field is philosophical research (Western and Islamic philosophy, and interdisciplinary research with a philosophical approach) and is published in both Persian and English, he noted.

This quarterly publishes articles by foreign researchers and professors and is published four times a year, and some of the world’s great philosophers are its guest editors.

Asghari said the JPI is a branch of the first journal of the University of Tabriz, called the Journal of the Faculty of Literature (first published in 1948), which was officially separated into four independent journals in 2006, and the Journal of Philosophical Investigations was one of them.

Asghari added that the JPI initially began publishing philosophical articles on various Islamic and Western philosophies under the editorship of Yahya Yathrebi, a retired professor of philosophy and mysticism at Allameh Tabatabaei University in Tehran.

“It published two issues yearly, but in 2014, I was appointed editor, and since then, an English issue has also been published, which was well received. This magazine is now a quarterly magazine that is published four times a year.”

Asghari noted that the owner of the magazine is the University of Tabriz, and it is published under the supervision of the Vice President for Research and Technology of this university.

“This magazine has been published continuously since 2006, and was initially published in written or printed form; but with the creation of a website, it has been published electronically since 2011, and sometimes in limited quantities, in physical print form as well.”

Regarding the type of articles in the journal and its authors, he said this journal publishes articles by authors in the field of philosophy and has recently published articles on interdisciplinary philosophical topics such as philosophy and cognitive sciences and the philosophy of artificial intelligence, and authors from inside and outside Iran send it articles from five continents.

Asghari added that with the journal’s indexing in the prestigious global citation database Scopus its reputation and popularity increased internationally, and it has now achieved a Q2 rank in this database.

This journal succeeded in being indexed in the Scopus citation database in January 2024 and fulfilled all the conditions required by this database, such as regular publication, participation of authors from different countries, publication of special issues, and publication in both Persian and English, with sometimes three English issues being published in one year, he stated.

Asghari noted that the JPI is the first humanities journal of the University of Tabriz to be indexed in Scopus and was also honored as the best journal at the Farabi Festival in 2019.

Perhaps the most obvious reason for the journal’s fame is the collaboration of great philosophers such as Slavoj Žižek from Switzerland, Susan Huck from the University of Miami, Galen Strawson from the University of Texas, Simon Critchley and others, who are both members of the journal’s faculty and are themselves authors of articles, Asghari went on to say.

As for publication of articles with a religious and Islamic approach in this journal:. He said various religious and Quranic topics, from religious and Islamic education to philosophical and theoretical approaches to the Quran, have been published in the journal.

“For example, the article ‘What and How Can We Learn from the Quran?’, a critical rationality perspective study by Professor Ali Paya, Professor of Islamic College, Middlesex University, London, England, is one such case.”

The purpose of this article is to introduce the critical rationalist approach to Quranic studies, he said.

“After presenting some introductory considerations about the Quran and Quranic studies in the first part, the second part provides a brief explanation of the critical rationalist perspective. It also briefly and concisely discusses the critical rationalist perspective on religion.”

The relationship between the Quran and semantic debates, a critical comparison (albeit brief) between the approach attributed to Imam Ali (AS) for understanding the Quran, known as the “method of interrogating the Quran,” and the critical rationalist approach, some possible criticisms of the critical rationalist approach to the Quran, and a summary of the material are the other parts of the article, Asghari stated.
