IQNA – The demolition of a historic mosque in the city of Saharanpur in India's Uttar Pradesh state drew strong condemnation from Islamabad.

Islamabad Denounces India Mosque Demolition

Pakistan on Sunday strongly denounced the demolition that took place on Saturday, describing it as an attack on Islamic heritage and religious freedoms.

Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said in a post by the ministry on the X platform that his country "strongly condemns the demolition of a more than century-old mosque in Saharanpur on September 5, 2026."

He added that targeting a historic place of worship "deserves condemnation," describing the demolition as "another manifestation of a broader anti-Islam campaign centered on the Hindutva ideology aimed at erasing Islamic heritage."

The term "Hindutva" is used to refer to Hindu nationalism in India.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson noted that the demolition of the historic Babri Mosque in 1992 "remains a lasting symbol of religious intolerance, prejudice and an ideology of hatred."

Indian authorities demolished the Babri Mosque, which was built during the Mughal era, claiming that it had been built at a site believed to be the birthplace of the Hindu deity Rama.

Haider Khan called on the international community to "immediately take note of the systematic persecution of Muslims by the Indian authorities, and the continued violation and demolition of their places of worship under state patronage."

He also called for those responsible for such actions to be held accountable, saying they target the fundamental religious freedoms and cultural heritage of all minorities, particularly Muslims.

India's NDTV reported that the mosque, located within the Saharanpur administration complex in Uttar Pradesh, was demolished following a court ruling that claimed the mosque had "occupied government land without permission."

Indian Muslims, meanwhile, objected to the demolition, stressing that the mosque had legal protection.
