The biggest event in the region, and even in the world, that happened after the victory of the Islamic Revolution was the Iraqi-imposed war on Iran and the Sacred Defense.
This is according to Supreme Leader’s senior advisor Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi who, speaking to IQNA, added that the war imposed by Iraq was the only one during the cold war era in which both the Western and Eastern Blocs backed one side of the conflict (Iraq).
The USS, the United States, and some European and Arab countries supported Iraq while the Iranian nation was alone in their fight against the aggressors, he underscored.
The general referred to the leadership of Imam Khomeini (RA) based on Islamic ideology as one of the factors that played a major role in the victory of the Iranian nation in the war.
The war with Iraq was also the first in which all members of the Iranian nation, including the youth, the elderly, men and women took part, he said.
General Safavi said that people’s defense of the country and the Revolution was very important in maintaining the aspirations of the Revolution and victory in the war.
“Another major aspect of our Sacred Defense was that we did not have as much technological power, equipment, and propaganda tools as the enemy did. The world media outlets did not support us but all of them rallied behind Iraq. Iraq received billions of petro-dollars from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia and volunteer forces from different countries served in Saddam’s army. But none of these could affect the resolve of the Iranian nation.”
He noted that the war with Iraq was an ideological war in which Islam’s front was facing the front of Kufr (disbelievers).
According to the Supreme Leader’s senior advisor, Saddam invaded Iran in 1980 to annul the 1975 Algiers Accord as the least objective and to overthrow the newly-established Islamic Republic as his major goal.
He said Saddam achieved none of his goals. “Saddam sent a letter to the then president of Iran Mr. Hashemi Rafsanjani saying he recognizes the Algiers Accord and the letter is available now. Moreover, instead of the Islamic republic of Iran, we saw that the Ba’athist regime of Iraq was overthrown.”
Safavi referred to the spread of the Islamic Awakening and said the Islamic Revolution of Iran and the country’s victory in the imposed war proved to Muslim nations that it is nations that play the main role in international power equilibrium and it is nations that say the last word and change the world’s equations.
“Today, nations believe that they can determine their own fate through resistance just as the Iranian nations did both in the Islamic Revolution and the Sacred Defense era,” he said, adding that a heavy price has been paid for safeguarding the Revolution, and for the independence and territorial integrity of the country.
