Translation of ideological works by late Ayatollah Mousavi-Lari into English played an important role in introducing Shia Islam to the West.
This is according to Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Saeed Bahmanpour, research deputy of the Islamic Center of England, adding that there was a time when translation of his works were the only reference books in English about Shia Islam.
He told IQNA that the late Ayatollah was a well-known figure in promoting Islam in the world.
He paid special attention to promotion of Islam in other countries and that is why most of his works have been translated in English, said Hojat-ol-Islam Bahmanpour, who has recently finished rendering some articles by late Ayatollah Mousavi-Lari into English.
“Translation of his works about God, the Resurrection, Imamate, and other Islamic beliefs into English has played a significant role in familiarizing the West with Shia Islam. There was a time when books by late Mousavi-Lari were the only sources about Shia Islam introduced by university professors to their students in Western universities.”
Hojat-ol-Islam Bahmanpour further said that Hamed Algar, Islamic studies and Persian language professor at the University of California, Berkeley, rendered most of Ayatollah Mousavi-Lari’s books into English.
He said Algar had embraced Islam and followed the Sunni school of thought before embarking on translation of Ayatollah Mousavi-Lari’s books, but later converted to Shia Islam inspired by the spirituality and wisdom in the late scholar’s works.
The research deputy of the Islamic Center of England stressed that the reason why Ayatollah Mousavi-Lari’s works have been received well among Muslims because he would answer questions and doubts about Islam logically and reasonably.
He went on to say that the late Ayatollah was very keen on conveying the teachings of Islam and never stopped making endeavors to this aim even when he was suffering from different illnesses.
