Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) addressed his deep and heartfelt congratulations to the entire Islamic Ummah, on the occasion of the advent of Eidul Adha, in a message that read:
“On the occasion of the advent of the blessed Eidul Adha for the current year 1434H, it gives me pleasure to address to the Islamic Ummah, East and West, my most sincere and heartfelt congratulations. This is a highly significant and auspicious event imbued with precious spiritual and religious meanings, an event that witnesses every year the great gathering of Muslims on the holy grounds of Mount Arafat all it entails in terms of that awe-inspiring spectacle filled with symbolism and glorious meanings that remind us Muslims of the need for unity and solidarity.
Indeed, by uniting and rallying their efforts, Muslims can face up to whatever schemes are plotted against them, accede to the keys of glory, inviolability and dignity, and offer their support to their (Palestinian) brethren such as to help them regain their usurped rights and defend their sanctuaries, foremost of which the City of Al-Quds Al-Sharif and the Palestine cause, the central cause, most high on the OIC agenda. I have witnessed with my own eyes, during my recent visit to Palestine the real size of the dangers of judeization besieging the Old City, and I took firsthand knowledge, on the ground, of the conditions under which the City is plying and the traumatizing sufferings of its people under the Israeli occupation’s inhuman practices, its violations and is continued blockade imposed around the City with a view to alter and disfigure its demographic Arabo-Islamic character.
In Syria, everyone has come to recognize that the tragedy of the absence of security, the continued violations of human rights and the killing and displacement of people, all have escalated to a horrific level that is predictive of grave-consequences known only to God. And in light of the international agreement reached in recent times on this dossier, it is our hope that the de-escalation may not be short-lived or limited in scope. We rather dare hope that it will be a long-term and comprehensive one in order that peace may be achieved in Syria and the region as a whole. On this momentous occasion we should not, either, turn our backs to the sufferings of the displaced Syrians who have sought refuge in neighboring countries, particularly with the onset of the winter season. We look to the charitable and humanitarian institutions to support the governmental efforts in offering relief to the distressed people and alleviating their tragedy.
Neither should we be oblivious of the ordeal of those who have been hit by natural disasters, such as earthquakes and floods, in certain parts of the Islamic world, whether in Baluchistan province (in Pakistan) or in Sudan. We here appeal once again to the fellow-members of the Islamic Ummah, individuals as well as governmental and non-governmental institutions and charitable and humanitarian bodies, to reach out in solidarity to those displaced and distraught people, based on the precepts of our noble faith which sets out the ideals of solidarity and mutuality as a fundamental value of Islamic fellowship.
For the achievement of early responses in the case of major disasters which come sweeping without any advance warning, I hereby reiterate my call for the establishment of a special fund to face up to such contingencies and to provide the necessary primary aid that suffers no delay.”
