TEHRAN (IQNA) – Police arrested a Shia cleric in Pakistan for supporting the oppressed people of Yemen.

Hojat-ol-Islam Nir Mostafawi is the director general of the Muslims Unity Council in Gilgit-Baltistan north of Pakistan.

He had organized a peaceful rally in support of the Yemeni people and condemnation of the Saudi crimes in the Arabian Peninsula country.

Police detained the cleric for the rally while extremist groups frequently stage rallies in support of the Al Saud regime without facing any problems.

Director General of Pakistan’s Muslims Unity Council Hojat-ol-Islam Raja Nasser Abbas Jafari strongly condemned the cleric’s arrest and called for his immediate release.

He said holding peaceful rallies in Pakistan is every citizen’s rights which should not be violated.

Hojat-ol-Islam Jafari added that instead of taking revenge on opposition groups in the name of the law, the government must act against extremist groups that have endangered Pakistan’s security.

Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in Yemen since March 2015.

The death toll from the Saudi-led aggression on Yemen so far has reached over 8000 people.

More than half of the total population of Yemen, some 14.4 million people, is also food insecure due to ongoing conflict and import restrictions.
