TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Islamic Center of Pflugerville in Texas, the US, is opening its doors and hosting an event to help the community understand more about the Muslim faith.

The free event, called "Islam: Understanding Islam and Muslims,” will be held at the center Feb. 27 from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

The gathering aims to inform attendees about Islam in an easy and understandable way for both Muslims and non-Muslims.

"We care about our neighbors in Pflugerville and we want them to understand us and we want us to understand them at a more common, residents of Pflugerville, Round Rock, Austin level,” said Faisal Naeem, a board member of the Islamic Center of Pflugerville.

An Islamic scholar will be at the event to answer any questions, Naeem said. Traditional food will be served.

In November, the Pflugerville community came together to hold an event in support of the mosque after it was vandalized. Naeem said there are misconceptions of Islam and Muslims that can be resolved through open communication and understanding.

"If I talk to one guy or 10 guys and they know that they know a person, as opposed to some caricature drawn in the media, then that’s all I really can achieve,” Naeem said. "I’m not a national political, I’m not on a national stage, so I just do it at my level and leave the rest up to God.”

Also as a result of the vandalism, 7-year-old Jack Swanson emptied his piggy bank with money he was saving to purchase an iPad and instead gave that money — a total of $20 — to the center.

"The response from the community was awesome when they came to support us,” Naeem said.
