TEHRAN (IQNA) – 25 countries have so far confirmed their participation in the upcoming international Quran competition for the visually-impaired, an official said.

Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Mehdi Seyed Mohammadi told IQNA that Iraq, Indonesia, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Malaysia are among the countries sending their representative to the contest.

He said Iran will be represented by Abdol Ghafour Joharchi from Taybad, northeastern Khorasan Razavi province.

The first edition of the international Quran competition for the visually-impaired will be held in the Iranian capital of Tehran concurrent with the country’s annual international Quran contest.

The State Welfare Organization will organize the event on May 12-17.

Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Mohammadi said members of the panel of the judges are the same in both contests, noting that one of the judges is a memorizer of the entire Quran from Yemen who is visually-impaired.

He further noted the competition is being organized by the Islamic Republic of Iran for the first time with the aim of promoting the Quranic culture in Muslim societies, especially the visually-impaired.

Organizers of the first international Quran competition for the visually-impaired previously announced that it is held for men only and those willing to take part in the contest are required to be memorizers of the entire Quran.

They also need to send an audio file of their recitation of some verses from the Quran along with a certificate showing they are memorizers of the entire Quran.

Each participant can be accompanied by one support person and the travel costs (including airfares, airport transfer and local transportation) as well as accommodation and meals for both will be covered by the organizers of the competition.
