TEHRAN (IQNA) – In the parking lot of Tops Markets at Grant & Amherst in Buffalo, New York, volunteers spent part of their Memorial Day Monday gathering, sorting, and bundling donated goods to feed local families-in-need.

Volunteers Gather Donations for Project Ramadan

Project Ramadan is an initiative organized by the Western New York Muslims Organization to help the needy during the month of Ramadan. Each basket is designed to help feed a family of 4-5 people for one month.

In New York State alone, one in every three children are living in households with a food shortage, organizers say, WKBW website reported.

"We have a lot of people who are donating their time, their money, so they can provide food for the needy,” organizer Sahar Siam says.

Last year, the group handed out 500 baskets.

During the holy month of Ramadan, which will begin on June 7 this year, Muslims abstain from eating or drinking anything from sunrise to sunset.

Ramadan is also a month when Muslims do more acts of charity than other months in the year.
