TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Maori translation of the Quran was front-and-center at an Islamic exhibition that started in Gisborne, New Zealand, Saturday.

The translation was completed three years ago by a Muslim follower who learned Maori over 20 years.

Mustanser Qamar, one of the organizers, said the Gisborne community is invited to come and see a range of translations of the religious text.

"Nowadays we see that there are people raising allegations that Muslims don't open up to others," he said. "Our community is taking the lead on this and translating the Quran into other languages."

Qamar says there was long debate in the Muslim community about whether the Quran should be translated out of Arabic, but as long as the original text is presented alongside a translation it is a helpful way to keep the religion open for all to understand.

The Islamic exhibition is free and open to members of all faiths. It features a display of about 50 translations of the Holy Quran in various world languages along with a series of placards carrying key teachings on fundamental and topical issues. There will also be short seminars discussing the Quran’s rejection of terrorism.

Organizers say they want the public to know that the true nature of Islam is to spread peace and tolerance.
