Louisiana House Candidate Urges Ban on Businesses that Employ Muslims

Using Islamophobic rhetoric to win popularity, Michael "Duke" Lowrie is running as a Republican for the 8th House District seat based in Bossier City.

Lowrie works for a local fire department. In 2015, he wrote a Facebook post saying he would no longer "go or do business" with any business that has a Muslim employee. "There are many who worship, if you call it that, islam here among us," Lowrie wrote. "I do not believe they deserve the peace of our culture or the continued fruits of our society while following this religion."

When contacted by news media last week, Lowrie did not back down from his previous statement. In addition to running for the 8th District seat, he is a member of the GOP State Central Committee.

Incumbent Mike Johnson is leaving the position because he recently won election to the US Congress. A special election for that district will take place in March.
