TEHRAN (IQNA) – The largest mosque in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, was inaugurated in the city’s al-Azhari neighborhood.

According to smc.sd website, political and religious officials and figures as well as different groups of people were present at the opening ceremony on Friday.

The mosque has been funded by Emirates-based al-Fajr Charity Institute, the report said.

Addressing the ceremony, the UAE ambassador to Sudan, Muhammad Hamad Al Junaibi, described the mosque as a symbol of knowledge and a place for promoting the teachings of the Quran and memorization of the Holy Book.

He also noted that al-Fajr Charity Institute has so far built 300 mosques in different countries.

Also speaking was Jabir Idris Uwaisha, a Sudanese religious official, who described attending mosques as a good way to avoid extremism and other challenges facing the youth today.

He also thanked the institute for building 28 mosques in different provinces of the African country.

The Republic of the Sudan is a country in Northern Africa.

Islam is the largest religion in Sudan and the Muslim population is 97 percent, including numerous Arab and non-Arab groups. The remaining 3 percent ascribe to either Christianity or traditional religions.
