TEHRAN (IQNA) – Head of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO) underlined the role and responsibility of religious leaders to defend religion in the face of extremism.

Religious Leaders Ought to Defend Religion against Extremism

Addressing the sixth religious meeting of Islam and Greek Orthodox Christianity, Abuzar Ebrahimi Torkaman added that combating extremism and terrorism is a common issue for followers of all divine faiths.

The meeting kicked off in Tehran on Monday with the theme of "Religious Wisdom; Ways for Combating Extremism”.

Ebrahimi Torkaman noted that throughout the history of human beings, there have been numerous cases of exploiting the name of religion and committing crimes in the name of religions, and so what extremist are doing today is not unpresented.

However, what matters is the responsibility of religious leaders to stand up against these crimes and defend true religion, he said.

The ICRO chief added that remaining silent over these crimes and religious deviations can be interpreted as approval for them and is not acceptable.

He further said that religious extremism is against reason and logic and that intellect and reason endorse true religion.

The Greek religious figures taking part in the meeting also stressed the need for combating religious extremism.

They also said there should be efforts for finding new models for peaceful coexistence, dialogue, interaction, unity and relations among followers of different faiths.

The meeting will continue until Wednesday, February 22.
