TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 18th edition of a regional Quran competition began in Djibouti on Sunday.

According to IINA, contenders from Somalia, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros Islands, Uganda, Yemen and Djibouti are competing in memorization of the Quran at three levels.

They are required to observe the rules of Tarteel and Tajweed recitation.

Winners will be awarded at a ceremony to be attended by Djibouti’s president, Ismail Omar Guelleh.

The competition is annually organized in the holy month of Ramadan for contestants from East African countries as well as Yemen.

Djibouti’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs has held the annual Quranic event since 1999.

Djibouti is a mostly French- and Arabic-speaking country, on the Horn of Africa.

Muslims make up more than 94 percent of the country’s 500,000 inhabitants.
