It was organized in Cape Town by the country’s Muslim Judicial Council in cooperation with the World Association of Quran memorization, hqmi.org website reported.
Memorization of the entire Quran and memorization of 15 and 5 Juzes (parts) of the Quran were the categories of the event.
A panel of judges made up of six Quran experts and chaired by Sheikh Abdullah Awali al-Din, head of the council’s Quranic affairs department, evaluated and scored the contestants’ performance and selected the top ones.
Winners of the competition were awarded at the closing ceremony held at Cape Town’s al-Salam Mosque.
A number of Quranic and religious officials and Quran activists attended the ceremony in which speakers lauded the participants and urged them to do more to learn the Quran and act upon its teachings.
The competition was held in the holy month of Ramadan, which is the month of the Quran and in which Muslims spend more time reading and contemplating on the Holy Book.
