NAM Experts Conclude Meeting, Underscore Israel Nuclear Threats
Experts from the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) have wrapped up their meeting in Tehran, highlighting in a final statement the Israeli nuclear threats.
Mohammad-Mehdi Akhoundzadeh, secretary of the expert-level meeting, told a press conference on Monday that the experts have drawn up a 700-paragraph document.
“The document calls on all parties to take urgent action in view of implementation of Iran's 1974 proposal for creating a Middle East free from nuclear weapons, and expresses profound concern about the nuclear arms held by Israel and the Israeli threats, and condemns the proliferation and stockpile of nuclear weapons,” Akhoundzadeh said.
“In two paragraphs, the document highlights the inalienable right of all [NAM] member states to development and use of peaceful nuclear energy and full development of nuclear fuel cycle in compliance with the rights and obligations in the [nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty] NPT,” he added.
Regarding the ongoing crisis in Syria, the NAM experts condemned “US unilateral sanctions against Syria and the military invasion of Syria in 2008.” They also appreciated international efforts, led mainly by UN special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and his predecessor Kofi Annan, aimed at settling the Syrian turmoil.
The document also denounces the massacre of Palestinian “women and children” by Israeli soldiers and the “military occupation of the Palestinian territories in violation of international norms and conventions”.
Akhoundzadeh said the document rejects “resorting increasingly to unilateralism”.
“NAM member states have expressed deep concern with the forceful economic tactics including unilateral sanctions against developing states…and reiterate that unilateral economic sanctions trample the fundamental rights of people in the targeted countries,” he added.
