TEHRAN (IQNA) – Social harms in the Islamic Ummah can be traced back to three main factors namely, putting personal interests above others, sticking to religious appearances without paying attention to deep concepts, and hypocrisy.

This is what Hani Chitchian, a member of the Quran and Etrat School of the University of Tehran, discussed in the 11th session in a series on Surah At-Tawbah. Following are excerpts from his remarks in the session:

Basically, Bara’at (disassociating from disbelievers) is a critical basis for building an Islamic society.

In this session, the three main roots of social harm in Muslim society will be briefly discussed.

These social harms initially form when the Muslim society becomes powerful.

The first group is those harms that are formed because some individuals put personal interests above social ones. These people will not accompany a movement if they find out that can undermine their personal interests.

The second group is those that come to the surface because of individuals’ attention to apparent features of Islam while failing to understand its deep teachings. Those who stick to appearances and do not have a deeper understanding can inflict severe damage on society.

The third group of harms is rooted in hypocrisy. Hypocrites remain in society only to secure their personal interests as they never wholeheartedly follow the religious government.

Different approaches are needed to address each one of these harms and actions that members of society take to confront them can play a crucial role.
