TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 16th edition of Al-Kawthar TV Channel’s international Quran competition will get underway on Wednesday evening.

A total of 36 Quran reciters from different countries like Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and Lebanon will compete for the top prize,

Registration for the contest began in February coinciding with auspicious birth anniversary of Imam Ali (AS), the first Shia Imam and concluded on March 8, concurrent with the birth anniversary of Imam Zaman (may God hasten his glad advent).

The applicants submitted a recorded file of their recitation of either verses 161 to 165 of Surah Al-An’am, or verses 142 to 144 of Surah Al-A’raf, or verses 110 to 115 of Surah Hud.

The submitted recitations were then analyzed by a panel of Quran experts and 36 of the contenders with the best performance were be selected to compete for the top prize.

From among them, 24 will make it to the semifinals and ultimately 5 top qaris will compete in the final round on the night before Eid Al-Fitr.

The phone-in Quran competition titled “Inna lil-Muttaqina Mafaza” (Indeed, for the righteous is attainment- Holy Quran, 78:31) is held in the blessed month of Ramadan every year.

It is the Muslim world’s biggest live Quran recitation competition aired by Al-Kawthar, an Arabic-language channel within the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting’s World Service.
