Speaking with IQNA, Professor Masoumi emphasized the need for heightened awareness around two critical issues. "The scientific community should not operate in isolation from society," he stated. "It must remain under some form of social oversight—whether from parliament, the media, or ordinary citizens."
Beyond external oversight, Masoumi argued that scientists themselves must cultivate a strong ethical awareness. He noted that researchers should carefully consider the potential applications of their work and refrain from projects likely to lead to harm.
"When scientists foresee with certainty or high probability that the outcomes of their research could be used in unethical or harmful ways," he explained, "they should abandon those pursuits and inform others of the possible risks."
Masoumi acknowledged that while these steps are crucial domestically, international efforts to align scientific practice with peace and ethical standards remain complex and challenging.
