Islamic Scholars Address Contemporary Challenges at Doha Conf.

IQNA – The 26th session of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy (IIFA) is currently underway in Doha, Qatar, bringing together nearly 230 scholars and experts from over 60 countries to deliberate on pressing contemporary issues through the lens of Islamic jurisprudence.

Organized under the auspices of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the conference aims to provide Sharia-based guidance on modern challenges, including artificial intelligence, mental health, and financial ethics.

In his opening remarks, OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha emphasized the significance of the Fiqh Academy's role in elucidating Islamic teachings and promoting values of tolerance amid global transformations.

Qatar's Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ghanem bin Shaheen Al Ghanim, highlighted the importance of Sharia studies in addressing human concerns, stating, "Sharia studies offer comprehensive answers to everything that concerns humanity. That is why Muslim scholars gather in Doha, to exchange perspectives on contemporary challenges and emerging issues, and to develop clear, faith-based guidance that resonates with society."

Koutoub Moustapha Sano, Secretary-General of the IIFA, noted that the conference is addressing a range of topics derived from real-life situations impacting both individuals and societies.

The conference, which runs until May 8, 2025, is considered the largest in the Academy's history in terms of research contributions and participant diversity.

  • The ethical and legal implications of artificial intelligence
  • Jurisprudential perspectives on electronic gaming
  • The impact of mental health on legal capacity in Islamic law
  • Sharia governance in contemporary Islamic financial institutions
  • The permissibility of consuming lab-grown meat and genetically modified foods

The conference aims to issue decisions and recommendations to guide policymakers, religious leaders, and thinkers, reinforcing the role of collective scholarly reasoning in addressing modern-day challenges within an Islamic framework.
