Commissioned in the late 15th century by Amir Ali Shir Nawa’i, a prominent statesman and patron of the arts, the iwan became the architectural centerpiece around which the Safavid-era Atiq Courtyard took shape.
Throughout its history, the structure has undergone several restorations. Following a devastating earthquake in 1674 CE (1084 AH), Nader Shah Afshar oversaw its re-gilding, adorning it with intricate inscriptions and decorative tiles from the Safavid and Afsharid periods.
The Iwan enjoys radiant golden façade and masterful blend of Persian and Islamic design, serving as a symbol of enduring faith, culture, and history for millions of pilgrims who visit the shrine each year.
