Videos recently shared on Arabic-language social media show young Malawians gathering outdoors, reciting and memorising Quranic verses despite challenging living conditions. The setting appears to be remote, open desert-like terrain in southern Malawi.

Malawi, a country in southeastern Africa, has a population of approximately 21 million. Christianity is the majority faith. The 2018 census found that Muslims make up around 13.8 % of the population.  Most of the Muslim community is Sunni and concentrated near the southern end of Lake Malawi.
