This is according to Sheikh Jafar Al-Hajar, Lebanese historiographer and Islamic studies researcher who also told IQNA that citing untrue issues in ceremonies held to mourn Imam Hussein (AS) martyrdom will be detrimental.
He said that even 13 centuries after the Ashura event, it is still remembered by Muslims and its influence on people’s mind gets stronger.
“The school of Ashura is a model and a lesson for the devotees of Imam Hussein (AS) and they have been inspired by Ashura to sacrifice oneself on the path of truth and human dignity.”
He underlined that getting inspiration from Ashura is not for Shia Muslims alone but many non-Muslims also take active part in Ashura mourning processions.
The Lebanese scholar said that some consider holding the mourning processions Muharram as an exaggeration (because the Ashrua incident took place centuries ago), but the fact is that Ashrua is an everlasting incident and it is upon every Muslim to revive its teachings.
He stressed that Ashura will stay alive until the re-appearance of Imam Mahdi (may God hasten his glad advent) who will save the world from injustice and oppression.
Asked about ways to benefit from the school of Ashura in confronting the challenges before the Muslim Ummah, Sheikh Jafar Al-Hajar said the objectives of Ashura and the aspirations of Imam Hussein (AS) should be recognized well.
He noted that Imam Hussein (AS) rose up (against Yazid) in order for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
The Lebanese scholar urged the oppressed nations of the world to follow Imam Hussein’s (AS) uprising and act upon the teachings of Imam Hussein’s (AS) school.
He went on to say that Imam Hussein (AS) taught everyone the right way of living one’s life.
“Today, we should learn from this incident (Ashura) and follow it in our life as a role model.”
