Dr. Ali Al-Hakim, lecturer and scholar from London, made the remark while delivering a lecture at the International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran.

The title of his lecture was “The Quranic Call for One Goal: The Moral Codes of Disagreement”.

“Despite the fact that the nature of all human beings is to be peaceful and upright, when human beings do not act upon reasoning and thought, their personal whims and caprices, which originate from devilish suggestions, break in to create disagreement. Despite Quranic call for “one goal”, many Muslims have deviated from the right path”, he said.

“We are sure that the Quran revelation was meant to unite its followers to follow one goal, having paved the way to follow the right path. One cannot possibly claim that the Quran was revealed to cause Muslims to engage in disputes and incessant clashes.”

Hakim said that the nature of human beings involves mutual love and amicability, but any disagreement that takes place between them is the result of evil whims and devilish suggestions. In this connection, Imam Ali (AS) says, “Nothing separated you from one another except wicked intentions and a bad conscience.”

He said these two factors that separate human beings are definitely acts of Satan. “Righteous people are required not to deviate from the path of the truth; rather, they should always be with the community as long as the community follows the truth. Yet, if the community is wrong, the righteous people must say nothing but the word of truth although they may sometimes be required to mix with the community so as to avoid any apparent discrepancy with them that causes harm to them, although they should be secretly disagree with this wrong.

“Unity and unanimity are the one and only certain way to achieve victory, while disagreement and discrepancy result in unavoidable failure and collapse. Those who disagree are always defeated even if they are right, while the united are triumphant even if they are wrong”, he said.

The 27th International Islamic Unity Conference was held in Tehran on January 17-19. More than 380 scholars and thinkers from 58 countries took part in the conference.
