An Iraqi Quran expert said Quranic activities have considerably developed in his country since the fall of the Ba’athist regime in 2003.

Speaking to IQNA, Yahya Muhammad Ali Al-Sahhaf said that since that year, a large number of Quranic centers and institutes have been set up in Iraq and various Quranic circles, sessions and competitions have been held.
He noted that as a result of this Quranic flourishment, the country now has many talented and skillful Quran reciters and experts.
According to Al-Sahhaf, Quranic education in its traditional style has been replaced with academic methods that teach the Quran in simpler and more efficient ways.
He further referred to his Quranic activities, saying that he started learning the recitation of the Quran early in childhood.
“I was keen on listening to recitations by great Qaris and tried to imitate their style. I also took courses on Tajweed, the Qara’at Sab’a (seven styles of recitation) and Qara’at Ashar (ten styles of recitation).”
Al-Sahhaf added that he has also successfully passed academic Quranic courses and acquired a certification in recitation.
“My first Quran teacher was Sheikh Abbas Al-Shami, a renowned Qari and Quran expert from the city of Kadhamayn.  I also learned a lot from other Quranic figures and imitated the style of prominent Qaris of the Muslim world like Abdul Fattah Sha’shaei, Sheikh Abolainain Shoaisha and Sheikh Mustafa Ismail.”
The Iraqi Quran expert added that he spends a considerable portion of his day in Quranic activities and programs and that he is now a Quran teacher, teaching the principles of Sowt and Lahn.
Al-Sahhaf said he has taken part in many Quran competitions in Iraq and elsewhere as a member of the jury panel, stressing that his best memories of attending Quranic events belong to the international Quran competition of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“I was acquainted with many Quranic experts and figures from Iran and other countries when I was in Tehran for the international Quran contest. I also witnessed how Iran holds Quran activists and figures in respect.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, Al-Sahhaf elaborated on ways for strengthening ties among the Muslim world Quran activists, saying that organization of international conferences and seminars with the participation of Quranic personalities from different countries could be a useful step.
