Mohammad Al-Sheikh, a Damascus University instructor, told IQNA that the militant group is also trying to get hold of Iraq's oil reserves and wage new wars in the region.
He said the West is providing support for the group aiming to use it against the countries of the axis of resistance against the Zionist regime.
The Syrian scholar underlined the need for unity and solidarity among Iraqis in the face of the ISIL threat, adding that all Iraqi people, no matter to what tribe, sect or religion they belong, need to stand united against the terrorists.
He further stressed that the ISIL is not a Sunni group and that Sunni Islam can not be blamed for the crimes it commits.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Al-Sheikh lauded the Fatwa issued against the ISIL by senior Iraqi cleric grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani and said the Fatwa is in the interest of all Iraqis.
Over the recent days, the ISIL militants in Iraq, who are allied with loyalists of Iraq’s former Baathist regime, have been wreaking havoc in the country and committing atrocities against people.
The militants overran large swathes of land in northern Iraq, including the cities of Mosul, the country’s second-largest city, and Tikrit, the birthplace of former Baathist dictator Saddam Hussein, in just two weeks.
Meanwhile, Iraqi army forces have flushed out ISIL militants from a major district near the city of Baqubah in Diyala province.
On June 13, Ayatollah Sistani called on the Iraqi people to take up arms and defend their country against Takfiri militants belonging to the ISIL. Iraqi media say more than two million people have so far voiced their readiness to join the fight.
