Speaking to IQNA, Sheikh Aqil Hussein al-Munawar said reciting with Khushu (submissiveness and attentiveness), observance of Maqamat (knowledge of Arabic musical notes) and beauty of the Sawt (voice) are the criteria he takes into consideration when scoring the contestants.
He added that Qaris should also properly control their breathing during recitation and be well-versed in the skills of Tilawa (recitation).
Sheikh Al-Munawar, who will be a judge in the field of Sawt in the upcoming competition’s recitation category, further said he has been inspired by great Egyptian Quran reciters.
“I listen to recitations by some 400 Qaris, mostly Egyptian, but the main reciters that have inspired me are Sheikh Mustafa Esmail, Sheikh Mahmoud al-Bina and Sheikh Muhammad al-Laythi.”
Born in 1954 in Indonesia’s Palembang city, Sheikh Al-Munawar has studied in the Islamic University in Medina and currently teaches theology and Quranic sciences in the Islamic University inhis hometown.
Asked about his participation in Quran competition, he said he has attended several Quranic contests in his country as well as one in the US where he won a title.
“Since I started studying in Medina, I have only attended local and international Quran competitions as a judge not a contestant,” he stated.
He said he has served as a judge in international Quranic events in Malaysia, Iran, Egypt, Kuwait, the UAE, Jordan, Sri Lanka and Brunei and next month will attend the international Quran contest in Bahrain.”
The Indonesian Quran master further referred to Quranic education in Indonesia and said teaching Quran memorization and recitation is widespread in the South East Asian country.
