Sayyed Muhammad Tantawi, Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar University in Egypt, declared his agreement on accepting volunteer Shia university students for learning Islamic sciences in the University and its affiliated centers.
Sheikh of Al-Azhar in a meeting with Ali Al-Amin, Lebanese Shiite Mufti, said that "In Islamic centers affiliated to the Al-Azhar University, curricula that are associated with both Shia and Sunni religions are being taught; therefore, Shia students can enter the centers."
He went on to say that all qualified Muslim university students can be admitted to the Al-Azhar University.
Given the historical background of the Al-Azhar University, it is the first time that Shia students are admitted to the university and the affiliated centers.
