He also said that Kano is regarded as the number one state in the same regard.
Sheikh Khalil made the remark while receiving the national president of the Quranic Memorizers Association, Sheikh Gwani Lawi Dan Zarga, when the association's leadership paid the Council of Ulamas a courtesy visit.
"From the data we gathered, Nigeria has the highest memorizers of the Holy Quran while Kano has the highest in the country. This fact was not, however, known because of our attitude towards the Holy Quran and its memorizers. Having the memorizers in our midst is a blessing from Allah but most of Nigerian Muslims don't seem to realize that. If we had known that the Quran memorizers are the light of our societies we would have been supporting them and monitoring the status of Nigeria in the world's ranking of countries with highest Quran's memorizers," Sheikh Khalil said.
He added that it is not only during the month of Ramadan that Muslims are supposed to remember the Quran's memorizers because that is the time they lead the night prayers (Tarawih/Tahajjud), [but] Muslims should appreciate their importance at all times.
"I want to assure you that we would do everything possible towards solving your problems. Kano state government is looking into the possibility of equating the memorizers with holders of PhD in its public service," Sheikh Khalil remarked.
