The mosque, flanked by two minarets of 50 meters high, can accommodate 3000 people at one time, according to Europe1.
“We hope that the newly-constructed building will become a center for fostering charity, compassion, and mutual understanding, and we hope it will be accessible to every one,” stated Abdelrazak Boutaher, chairman of the mosque’s administrative council.
The mosque is also surmounted by a 25-meter dome and has three floors. The first and second ones are respectively devoted to men and women, while the third floor is for children. The building is equipped with two large prayer halls and an educational room, plus a library.
The construction began in 2003 and was scheduled to finish within 2 years. However it took 7 years to open its doors to worshipers. The delay is reportedly due to the opposition raised by the local xenophobe party.
