Muslim psychologists are required to implement Quranic principles in the process of medical treatment to cure diseases within a short period of time.
Talking to IQNA, Hojat-ol-Islam Masoud Azarbaijani, deputy of University and Seminary Research Center, highlighted the significant role of the individuals’ religious beliefs in the treatment of their diseases, adding: “Even if patients make use of standard treatments to cure their diseases, they cannot obtain ideal results unless they hold strong religious beliefs.”
Referring to Verse 27 of Surah Ibrahim: “God will strengthen the believers with a steadfast word, both in this life and in the everlasting; God leads the evildoers astray, He does what He will,” he said such a constant attitude would help believers remain immune to mental disorders and keep strong against life’s challenges.
“The Holy Quran puts a lot of emphasis on holding steadfast beliefs, highlighting the role of performing religious rituals in improving man’s health, however unusual those actions may appear in people’s eyes.”
Asked whether, according to Islamic doctrines, different types of diseases influence one another, he replied: “Physical illnesses are at the lowest level compared to mental, ethical and ideological disorders and they can definitely have great impacts on each other at different levels.”
“Having a pure heart, according to the Quran, is the only way of achieving perfect health in all the physical, psychological, ethical and ideological (the highest) aspects.”
Hojat-ol-Islam Azarbaijani further highlighted the necessity of using Quranic treatment, urging Muslim psychologists to implement basic Quranic principles for curing diseases through training, practice and feedback.
“Patients should be advised to modify their beliefs, if necessary, through the required instructions and exercises which can improve both their physical and psychological health,” he went on to say, adding that similar strategies can be applied for those suffering from ethical problems.
He further called for offering Quran-based treatments in academic and more up-to-date formats so that they can lead to more effective results.
