TEHRAN (IQNA) – A prominent Iranian international qari has expressed criticism about holding Quranic competitions which do not yield tangible results.

Hamed Shakernejad

“There is no problem in the nature of holding Quranic competitions and the participation of interested people in them, however, it is not correct to tie the lives of Qaris and Quran-lovers to competitions,” Hamed Shakernejad told IQNA on Wednesday.

“Some people breathe a sigh of relief after the conclusion of a Quranic contest. How is it possible to explain this hardship? The Quran is here to be a source of peace for our spirit and body not a source of stress.”

Young qaris should be allowed to recite the Quran and find their own characteristics, he said.

“One should take a look at paths traveled and past competitions, what has been the result of these contests?” he framed.

Awarding one or two individuals as top performers does not mean that the competition has had good results, noted the international qari.

“Some consider Egypt as a model in Quranic issues and if accept this, we should ask the rise of talents such as Mustafa Ismail and Abdul Basit were the result of which competitions? Is it even possible to find such talents through contests?”
