TEHRAN (IQNA) – We read in the Holy Quran that “We have sent you the Book which clarifies all matters. It is a guide, a mercy, and glad news to the Muslims.” (Surah An-Nahl, verse 89)

Holy Quran

But does this mean that every science can be found in the Holy Book?

Speaking at the 24th session of a Quran interpretation course, Qom Seminary scholar Ayatollah Abolqassem Alidoust, has discussed this issue.

Here are excerpts from his remarks at the session:

The question (we want to discuss today) is whether all sciences and statements are there in the Quran. There are verses in the Holy Book that can address this question. For example verse 38 of Surah Al-An’am: “Nothing is left without a mention in the Book.” Or verse 59 of the same Surah: “… and there is no grain in the darkness of the earth, fresh or withered, but is recorded in a clear Book.”

What does “a clear Book” refer to? Some say it may be the book of nature. There have been mentions of this in some other verses as well. If that is the case, it means that the creatures in nature reach the perfection they deserve. Then verse 59 of Surah Al-An’am is understood in connection with verse 20 of Surah Al-Isra: “Each group will receive its share of your Lord's generosity. Your Lord's generosity is not limited.”

Are All Sciences Found in Quran?

But if “a clear Book” refers to the Quran, the question that is raised is whether everything can be found in the Quran. Some say this verse should be interpreted by paying attention to the mission of the Quran, which is guiding people. Allameh Tabatabaei says in Al-Mizan Exegesis of the Quran that the Quran is the book of guidance and it has left nothing unsaid in this regard.

For example you say about a book on Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) that everything thin one wants can be found in this book. But by everything you mean everything about Fiqh not other sciences.

So what we said today can be summed up as follows:

1- We have no doubt that “Certainly the outside of the Quran is wonderful and its inside is deep (in meaning). Its wonders will never disappear, its amazements will never pass away and its intricacies cannot be cleared except through itself.”

2- As long as proportionality is not established between a learned person and the thing that can be understood, they are not comprehended in full. We should elevate ourselves to a level where we can understand the Quran. Everyone comprehends the Holy Book with the scope of his knowledge and ability.

3- Anyone who contemplates the Quran will gain something,

4- Sometimes one finds certain points in the Quran and he should appreciate them but not try to impose what is in his mind on the Quran.

5- We must observe the principles of understanding and interpreting the Quran in order to be able to defend what we attribute to the Holy Book.
