IQNA – The largest Ta’zieh performance was held in a village near the city of Fasa, Fars Province, on July 18, 2024.

Ta’zieh is a theatrical performance recounting the events that took place during the 680 Battle of Karbala.

It is aimed at commemorating Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam.

Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and 72 of his loyal companions, were martyred on Ashura in the battle of Karbala against the second Umayyad caliph, Yazid I. Imam Hussein (AS) was killed after he refused to pledge allegiance to the tyrant ruler.

Ta’zieh rituals symbolize the eternal and unwavering stance of truth against falsehood and humanity's struggle against tyranny. Ta’zieh was registered on UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011.
