IQNA – To curse or swear is to attribute an inappropriate quality to someone out of anger or hatred.

Islam forbids swearing

Islam totally disapproves of it, so much so that the Quran commands Muslims not even to curse the gods of the unbelievers.

Based on the intention of the one who uses it, swearing can be divided into several types.

Sometimes it is used to annoy someone, in which case the curser is disrespecting the other person's reputation. Sometimes cursing is done just for fun, with no intention of annoying the other person. And in some cases, this improper behavior becomes a habit for some people and they curse out of habit and without any specific intention.

Whatever the intention, this action has been warned against by Islam, to the extent that the Quran even forbids cursing the gods of infidels: “Believers, do not say bad words against the idols lest they (pagans) in their hostility and ignorance say such words against God.” (Verse 108 of Surah al-Anaam)

It has been narrated from the Holy Prophet (PBUH) who said cursing and swearing have no place in Islam.

Swearing and cursing sow the seeds of enmity and hatred in the hearts of others. A person who curses others only adds to his enemies instead of spreading friendship.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, “Do not curse others lest you earn their enmity.”

Other consequences of cursing include reduced sustenance, unanswered prayers, loss of paradise, and entrance into hell. It has been narrated from the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that entering paradise is Haram (forbidden) to those who curse.
