Combining Traditional, Modern Methods of Quran Teaching in Oman

IQNA – The Omani Society for the Care of the Holy Quran has succeeded in familiarizing thousands of people with the teachings of the Holy Book by adhering to traditional methods of education and combining them with modern techniques.

The society is a non-profit organization that was established in 2016, with its headquarters in the capital Muscat. 

Currently, Fahd bin Muhammad al-Khalili heads the society’s board of managers.

The institution has been established with the aim of serving in the education and memorization of the Quran for all segments of society and has many branches throughout the country.

The society’s commitment to the Holy Quran sees its mission as leading in the dissemination of knowledge and the preservation of the Holy Quran among all segments of society, striving to prepare a capable community in the areas of recitation, memorization, Tarteel, and reflection on the Holy Quran through programs, projects, and activities that combine traditional principles and methods with modern technology.

The expansion of awareness regarding the importance of the Holy Quran and commitment to it across all social classes; the promotion of a competitive spirit among those interested in memorizing the Holy Quran; and the teaching of reading and recitation of the Holy Quran using authentic Qara’at are among the most important goals of this institution.

Establishing Quran teachings centers for boys and girls across the country; holding educational courses, organizing national and international competitions on Quran memorization, Tarteel and interpretation, holding cultural, sport an recreational activities; and launching a specialized Quranic website are among its major activities.

Ahmed bin Saeed bin Khalifa al-Busaeedi, the deputy head of the society, says using new methods of teaching the Quran via websites and social media has spread in Oman since the days of the coronavirus pandemic.

The society has defined its mission as assisting in the education of recitation and memorization of the Quran and adhering to Quranic teachings and contemplation through programs and activities that include two elements: commitment to religious educational traditions and adaptation to contemporary needs.

Conducting Quranic programs remotely using communication tools and electronic applications, as well as through websites and social networks such as YouTube, organizing virtual Quranic competitions, and holding sessions and programs in the virtual space including lessons, lectures, seminars, etc. is Oman’s new approach to teaching Quranic sciences and teachings, he noted.

He added that Omani people have welcomed this approach and the programs implemented by the society using the approach.

Elsewhere in his remarks, al-Busaeedi said the society has designed its programs based on the values of skill, innovation, integrity, promoting the spirit of brotherhood, continuous progress, and transparency.

He said the society has 15 branches across Oman and plans to launch new centers in various parts of the country.

So far, more than 5,700 individuals have benefited from the society’s Quran teaching courses, he stated.
