Abdullah Sayed Abdullah, who is representing Egypt in the Tarteel category of Iran’s 41st International Holy Quran Competition, spoke to IQNA on the sidelines of the Quranic event.
He said he had previously taken part in Qatar’s international Quran competition and that it is his first visit to Iran.
He said Iran organizes the Quran competitions in the best possible manner and prepares thoroughly for it, which is truly commendable and deserving of gratitude.
Abdullah compared the features of Iran’s contest to other competitions, saying that the organization and structure of the competitions in Iran are much better, and there is greater attention given to optimally holding the Quranic events.
Asked about how he began reciting the Quran and his role model in this field, he said, “I started learning the Holy Quran from childhood by memorizing it and then practicing Tajweed. I am participating in this competition in the recitation category.”
He said he does not imitate any particular qari when reciting the Quran but admires all the great Egyptian reciters, such as Sheikh Muhammad Rif'at, Sheikh Mustafa Ismail, Sheikh Minshawi, Sheikh Shahat Muhammad Anwar, Sheikh Muhammad Basuni, and Sayed Metwally Abdel Aal.
Regarding his assessment and knowledge of Iranian reciters, he said. “I have many friends among Iranian qaris. Yesterday at the competition, I was with Mr. Hadi Esfidani, who is my friend. I also met Mr. Mehdi Taqipour in Iraq. Additionally, I am acquainted with Mr. Hamed Shakernejad.”
Quran reciters and memorizers from 144 countries took part in the preliminary round of Iran’s 41st International Holy Quran Competition and from among them, representatives of 27 countries have made it to the finals in the men and women sections.

The finals, underway in the northeastern hoy city of Mashhad, will wrap up on Friday in a closing ceremony where top winners will be named and awarded.
The International Holy Quran Competition of the Islamic Republic of Iran is annually organized by the country’s Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization.
It aims to promote the Quranic culture and values among Muslims and showcase the talents of Quran reciters and memorizers.
